A Few Impressions From ISE 2013 in Amsterdam

The ISE (Integrated Systems Electronics) is a »tradeshow for the professional AV and electronic systems industry«. If you are interested in multi-touch hardware like multi-touch tables, the ISE is the top venue in Europe. Therefore, I have attended the ISE in the last five years and want to share this year’s impressions with a focus on touch products.

Make: Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing

The Make magazine published a special issue for 3D printing beginners. I received my copy yesterday and flipped through its pages quickly. It gives an excellent introduction about materials, file formats and 3D printing technology in general. Additionally, the issue provides valuable information about which kinds of printers you can buy and which ones are appropriate for you. So if you want to get started in 3D printing (or just want a good guide) be sure to get a copy.

For German readers: In Germany, you should get the Make magazine in selected book stores (and not at newspaper kiosks – not even the good ones at railway stations. I did ask and have only earned dull looks and the answer »hamwernich.«). I ordered my copy at amazon.de.

Animated Gif of Printing an iPhone 5 Dock from Thingiverse with the Ultimaker

ultimaker3DPrintiPhone5Dock

As there is still no official iPhone 5 dock available by Apple, I decided to print my own dock with the Ultimaker using a template from Thingiverse. I took some pictures while printing it and assembled an animated gif.

If you want to know how to create an animated GIF, here is an explanation.

Twisting Kochflake Vase from Thingiverse Printed with the Ultimaker

I love the possibilities of printing 3D objects with the Ultimaker. One of the first things I printed is this stunningly beautifully twisted Kochflake vase from Thingiverse. The shape of the vase is based on the Koch Snowflake fractal curve. I love how the vase looks different in all kinds of lighting situations. Take a look (after the click):

Surface2TUIO – Microsoft Surface 2 aka Samsung SUR40 TUIO Overlay [Update]

As I have read in a comment in the blog accompanying our TUIO AS3 project, there is a software overlay that you can use on a Surface 2 tabletop system to forward the Microsoft touch and fiducial events via TUIO to TUIO-based apps. I have not tried it so far but hopefully I will have the opportunity to test it, soon. If so, I will report here. Yesterday I had the opportunity to test Surface2TUIO on a Samsung SUR40 device. It works like a bliss. After starting it, a small window opens telling that Surface2TUIO should be working. The application simply forwards Microsoft touch events as TUIO messages. By the way: Surface applications are still working next to Surface2TUIO.

As the link to Surface2TUIO in the forum is dead, you can download it here in the meantime.

Full Color 3D Prints at EuroMold 2012 Using ZPrinters

Additionally to the range of fascinating cheap 3D printers at EuroMold, I was really intrigued by the 3D color prints produced by the ZPrinters from 3D Systems. Those prints really look great. However, ZPrinters are ‘a bit’ more expensive than the cheap 3D printers (ZPrinter pricing starts at approx. 14.000€).

Take a look at the prints:

Cheap Readily Assembled 3D Printers at EuroMold 2012: 3D Systems Cube, Fabbster, MakerBot, German RepRap

Today I attended the Euromold 2012 in Frankfurt/Main. I was mainly interested in affordable 3D printing. As there are many printer kits that you can order online and assemble at home (which is fun but sometimes also tedious work) I was wondering what readily assembled printers you can buy at which prices. So, here are a few of my (first) impressions. I am still quite new to this area, so maybe I may have overseen a few detail. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to post them in the comments.

Python Dynamic Playlist Script for SHOUTcast Transcoder (for Linux)

If you want to provide music to a SHOUTcast server directly from the same server (instead of streaming it to the server from you PC) then SHOUTcast Transcoder is your weapon of choice.
